STAR Announces Steering Committee Members for 2021

During our February 8th Annual General Session, we reviewed STAR (Standards in Technology for Automotive Retail) accomplishments for 2020 including membership growth and technical progress. We also outlined plans for 2021 which center on modernization of STAR standard automotive integrations through update of our STAR BOD XML schema and through development of our new API framework and JSON schema.

In support of wider collaboration and faster development of new STAR standards, STAR is proud to announce its 2021 Steering Committee members. We’ve expanded the Steering Committee team to include the eighteen (18) members listed below.

2021 Steerco

We believe that the STAR team is stronger than ever and we look forward to working with the Steering Committee to drive results in the coming year. Stay tuned for more announcements over the coming weeks!

Thank you,

Rafael Maldonado

STAR NEWSLETTER - December 2020

As we come to the end of calendar year 2020, I can report that STAR continued to make good progress in its efforts towards enhanced communications, new membership, sub-committee development projects and steps towards modernization of STAR standards. In spite of covid-19, STAR achieved membership momentum which we expect to carry into 2021.

New STAR Members: we are pleased to announce that AON’s Cyber Security group has joined STAR! Aon plc (NYSE:AON) is a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement and health solutions. AON is the sixth new member to join STAR during the August – December timeframe. We look forward to working with AON and our other new STAR team members as we shape new standards for automotive computing.

The six new STAR members for 2020 are:

  • Tekion (joined August 1st)
  • Cloudera (joined September 1st)
  • Wipro (joined September 1st)
  • Dealer360 (joined October 1st)
  • Market Scan (joined October 1st)
  • AON Cyber Security (joined December 1st)

STAR Dealer Advisory Group: to establish closer coordination with automotive retail dealers and based on the rapidly changing automotive computing environment, STAR has initiated formation of a Dealer Advisory Group sub-committee to the STAR Steering Committee. We expect this sub-committee will assist STAR in prioritizing development efforts as STAR embarks on updated standards employing REST APIs.

STAR Showcase: we initiated a “STAR Showcase” online webinar series in mid-2020. These webinars are open to STAR members and member candidates. Our second showcase was held on October 29th to provide an overview of REST API development in three key areas including Online Service Appointment, Online Vehicle Sales, and kick-off of a Parts Pricing and Availability API. We are planning a third showcase meeting in late January, we expect details to be announced next week.

2021 STAR GENERAL SESSIONS MEETING: we are finalizing plans to host the 2021 STAR General Sessions Meeting in a virtual format on Monday, February 8th. This meeting date was shifted to dovetail with the 2021 NADA Show, which will also be conducted using a virtual format during Tuesday, February 9th to Thursday, February 11th. Details for the STAR General Session will be provided in early January. Details for the 2021 NADA Show are available at https://show.nada.org

We expect more announcements over the coming weeks so please check back on this site or on LinkedIn.

Thank you,

Rafael Maldonado

STAR BOD Architecture Refactoring Initiative

STAR 6

This initiative emerged from the recommendations provided by STAR members during the March 2017 STAR General Session Meeting.

High Level STAR XML BOD Architecture Refactoring Proposal

     • Full refactoring and clean-up of STAR XML BODs based on OAGIS 10, branching off into STAR 6.

     • For an extended transitional period, in parallel maintain the current STAR 5 branch with extensions and updates
(similar to the transition to STAR 5 in 2006).

     • Aim is to secure future relevance of STAR as an industry B2B standard by
         • Ensuring alignment with the latest major OAGIS release:
             • Improved support for future Mobile/Cloud/REST API/JSON expansions of STAR.
             • Compliance with updated UN/CEFACT 3.0 definitions (incl. low level components, type definitions and code lists)

     • Cleaning up and harmonizing BODs for more consistent data modeling to make STAR faster to implement and easier to use:
             • Consistency in naming and design rules (eg.OAGIS verb usage and language handling)
             • Increased reusability of components between BODs, eg.
                 • naming of nouns (eg.prices in order, shipment and invoice)
                 • consistent usage of proprietary elements vs. more general structures (name value pairs)
             • Removal of ambiguous and/or deprecated content, based on current members usage of existing BODs
яндекс
     • Incentivizing former and new members to engage with STAR.

This presentation describes the background and details of the proposed project.

Questions and Answers

Q: Why do we need to migrate to OAGIS 10, can we just refactor and clean-up the existing global components and BODs?

A: Currently STAR 5 implements OAGIS 9.  In order for STAR to align with the latest B2B global standards, the recommendation is to adopt OAGIS 10.

Q: Can you provide examples of latest ISO standards that the current STAR XML architecture does not support?

A:  1) ISO 247 Currency Codes that was published on September 2015. https://www.iso.org/iso-4217-currency-codes.html

       2)  ISO 8601 full support of date formats. Currently we use the xsd:date xml schema type that does not support all of the ISO 8601 date

formats such as: Ordinal dates defined by the year, the number of the day in the year, dates identified by calendar week, and day numbers.

Q: How will STAR 6 affect my current STAR 5 implementations?

A: STAR 5 current implementations will not be affected. STAR will maintain and support STAR 5 for approximately 4 years.
